Winter barley RL results 12th Aug 2013
“Winter barley yields for 2013 currently average 8.51t/ha, which is just below the five-year average of 8.76 t/ha, stated HGCAs RL manager, Dr Simon Oxley, speaking in mid-August.
“Best yields were seen at Welbourn in Lincolnshire where varieties average 10.01t/ha.”Looking at the results from all nine sites, KWS Glacier has achieved a yield of 108 per cent of the control varieties. Retriever, which was not present in all the trials, has the top yield of 109 per cent. The six-row hybrid variety Volume has achieved a yield of 105 per cent of the control varieties, performing exceptionally well in the trial in the Scottish Borders.
“Although with malting varieties it is all about quality, Talisman and SY Venture are currently performing well on yield,” he added.
“Unsurprisingly, untreated yields are running above average compared with the five-year average, with the six-row conventional variety KWS Meridian standing out as performing well in 2013, which is a reflection of its good disease-resistance spectrum.
“There are some promising yields coming from the candidate varieties on both treated and untreated yield. This bodes well in bringing forward new high-yielding feed varieties with good disease resistance,” said Dr Oxley
