Latest winter wheat and spring barley harvest results

Commentary for winter wheat and spring barley RL harvest results tables from Dr Simon Oxley.

Winter wheat

Average yields from 2014 HGCA Recommended List trials are currently 11.53 t/ha. This is one and a half tonnes higher than the five-year average of 10.01 t/ha. Yields at the 1st wheat site at Frisby in Leicestershire achieved an average of 13.73 t/ha.

The highest yield from current RL varieties is the hard feed wheat Evolution (105% of the control varieties). The five-year average figures are more meaningful when looking at performance over several seasons. Evolution achieves 106% on the five-year average. This is equalled byKWS Kielder followed by KWS Santiago (105%) and Dickens (105%)

Soft feed varieties which performed well in2014 include Leeds (104%) and Panacea (104%). On the five-year averages, both varieties achieve 105% of the control varieties, so have performed well both in2014 and in the five-year average figures.

Quality wheats are best judged on quality and market requirements, but on the basis of yield, the provisional Group 1 variety Skyfall has had an exceptional year in 2014 with a yield of 103% (102%five-year average). The Group 2 variety Cubanita achieved 100% in 2014 (101% five-year average). The Group 2 variety Panorama has had a good year in 2014 at 104%,with the five-year average yield 100%.

The biscuit wheats (Group 3) yields showIcon achieving 103% in 2014 (102% five-year average) and Zulu achieving 102% both in 2014 and in the five-year average.

Candidate varieties showing good yields include the hard feed variety Reflection with 106% in 2014 and 107% in the five-year average. The hard feed variety Jorvick has 104% in 2014 and 105% in the five-year average, the potential bead making variety KWS Lili has 105% in 2014 and in the five-year average.

Spring barley yields

Spring barley yields in 2014 HCA RecommendList trials are currently averaging 8.24 t/ha, which is just over a tonne per hectare above the five year average of 7.22 t/ha.

The brewing variety Sanette (MAGB provisional approval 2) yielded 108% of the control varieties in 2014 (107%five-year average). KWS Irina (MAGB provisional approval 1 for brewing) achieved 109% in 2014 and 107% in the five year average.

Looking at the fully approved varieties, Odyssey (full approval for brewing and distilling) has a yield of 102% in 2014 and for the five-year average. Concerto (brewing and distilling) has a yield of 98% also in 2014 and the five-year average. Propino (full approval for brewing) achieved a yield of 102% in 2014 and over the five-year average. Moonshine (full approval distilling) has a 2014 yield of 100% and 98% in the five-year average.

The feed variety Shada has a 2014 yield of 108% in 2014 (107% five-year average).
