The son of a Cumbrian fell farmer Mr Newbold studied agricultural engineering at Harper Adams University.
“Commenting on his appointment Mr Newbold said: “Agricultural engineers are unsung heroes who provide the tools for farmers to feed the world, to help tackle climate change and to manage land. It is very inspiring to be associated with the industry and I look forward to having the chance of further developing the profession when I become president in 2012.”
