Closely following the recent signing of long-termUK marketing and product development agreements with vegetable breeding giantBejo and seed treatment specialists Incotec, Elsoms Seeds has announced anexpansion of its agriculture business with the launch of a new wheat breedingcollaboration with European plant breeders, Nordsaat and Saaten Union Recherche.The new breeding programme will draw on genetics and skills from all threecompanies and will be undertaken by a new company called Elsoms Wheat Ltd.
Elsoms Wheat Limited will see a majorincrease in the development of wheat breeding work at our plant breedingstation at Spalding Lincolnshire, putting it in the top league of wheatbreeding programmes in the UK, with a budget, genetics and technologies tocompete with the leading multinational companies working in the UK, commentedRoger Keeling, Elsoms seeds chairman.
The development work carried out by allthree companies has enabled an expansion of the plant breeding team at Spaldingand gives it access to a wide range of technologies via the Saaten UnionBiotech lab, which will enable us to transform our breeding programme to asignificantly di-haploid system, increasing speed to market, said Roger. Lastautumn, we entered a record number of new lines into UK National List Trialsand our expanded programme will provide UK wheat farmers with a more regularsupply of improved varieties, he added.
The new programme will create a strongcollaborative relationship between Elsoms Seeds, Nordsaat and Saaten UnionRecherche with a free flow of ideas and information between the threecompanies said Roger.
