Dunns seed certification success reflects industry-leading standards

Oneof the oldest agricultural businesses in the UK has achieved the latest seedindustry accreditation, designed to highlight the sectors commitment toend-user and environmental responsibility.

Dunns(Long Sutton) Limited, which celebrates its 180th birthday thisyear, is one of the first companies in the country to have been judged to meetthe requirements of the European Seed Treatment Assurance (ESTA) scheme.

ESTAwas devised by the European Seed Association and seed treatment manufacturersin response to an EU Directive that requires insecticide seed treatments to becarried out only in professional seed treatment facilities.

Thescheme was developed to preserve essential plant protection products, protectinternational trade and ensure ongoing sector investment ahead of any additionalEU legislation, says Franek Smith of Dunns.

BeingESTA accredited means Dunns has been recognised as treating seed in the safestmanner possible, reflecting our industry-leading standards, he explains.

TheESTA scheme examines quality systems such as chemical storage, calibrationcontrol and risk assessment through Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point(HACCP) standards, with a key focus on dust control. The standard can beaudited at any time, so accurate records have to be maintained.

Ourfarmer customers can be sure they are buying seed, whether grain, pulses oroilseeds, that is treated to the highest possible standard while having minimalimpact on the environment.

Theaward reflects the quality ethos that runs throughout the Dunns business, saysMr Smith. Just over a year ago we achieved A-grade BRC accreditation thatconfirmed the companys food product safety, legality and quality. The latestaward reflects our determination to meet all our customers needs.
