AnEU regulation has restricted use of the herbicide/desiccant active substanceglufosinate-ammonium to be by band or spot application only.
Glufosinate-ammoniumis produced solely by Bayer CropScience and in the UK is sold as Harvest. Productmanager Dr Albert Pineda says this restriction will mainly affect potatogrowers. It rules out overall application for weed control or desiccation butdoes not affect flail and spray desiccation. This will continue to be anauthorised use.
Therestriction will be implemented by amendment of the product label although theMAPP number will not change. Final sale date of old label Harvest fromdistributors to users is 12 May 2014 and final use or disposal date is 12November 2014.
Harvestis also widely used by fruit growers for weed control but they will not beaffected as authorised uses on the new label include weed control in top andsoft fruit, vines and forestry and weed control in strawberries.
DrPineda adds: Other restrictions on the new label for all growers to note arethat applications must be made using low drift nozzles and/or spray shields, application rates must not exceed 750 g active substance/ha per application, and there is a maximum of two applications per year.
Healso underlines the advice to always read the label during the transitionfrom old to new label stock and in particular check authorised uses.
