Five HGCA Recommended List winter barley trialshave been harvested as from 21st July 2014, reports senior research and knowledge transfermanager, Dr Simon Oxley.These are well distributed throughout England from Teesside in the north,Hampshire in the south, Suffolk to the east and Hereford to the west.
It is early days to make any conclusions on theseason, he comments, since early trials may not always reflect themajority, but the signs are looking good with an average yield of 10.78t/hawhich compares favourably to the five year average yield of 9.04t/ha.
The six row hybrid variety Volume tops the yieldtable so far with a yield of 106% of the control varieties. The six rowconventional variety KWS Meridian isnt far behind with a yield of 104%. Thecontrol varieties this year are Flagon, Cassata, Volume, KWS Cassia and KWSMeridian. The average yield from these five varieties is used to calculate 100%yield.
KWS Tower leads the two row feed varietiescurrently on the HGCA Recommended list at 102%, a yield that is equalled by thecandidate feed variety Daxor. The Recommended List varieties KWS Glacier,California have a yield of 101% which is equalled by the candidate 2 row feedvariety KWS Infinity.
Malting barley yields are all similar with Flagon,Cassata, SY venture and Talisman all achieving a yield of 97% of the controlvarieties.
