Winter barley commentary from Simon Oxley
The average yield from HGCA Recommended List winter barley trials is 9.62t/ha. This is 0.69t/ha higher than the five-year average figure of 8.93t/ha. The six-row hybrid feed variety volume tops the yield table both in 2014 (106% of the control varieties) and the five-year average (107%).
The six row conventional feed variety KWSMeridian has also performed well in 2014 (105%), giving it a five-year average of 103%.
Two-row feed varieties with high yields include KWS Glacier (103% in 2014, 104% five-year average) and KWS Tower (101%in 2014, 104% in five year average).
Malting barley varieties are selected on market requirements but the fully approved brewing variety SY venture achieves96% in 2014 (98% five-year average) and the provisionally approved brewing variety Archer achieves 93% in 2014 (96% five-year average).
Candidate varieties KWS Infinity (two row feed) and Daxor (six-row conventional) have performed well achieving 105% for the five-year average yield.
