Ecosyl silage experts will be assessing the scale of avoidable, but often underestimated, losses that occur in maize after ensiling at this year’s UK Dairy Day.

As attention turns to harvesting and ensiling this year’s forage maize as an important crop for maximising milk produced from forage, Ecosyl silage experts will be assessing the scale of avoidable, but often under-estimated, losses that occur in maize silage at this year’s UK Dairy Day.

As well as looking at effective clamp management, this will also include guidance on which types of silage additive to use – for example, depending on how soon after ensiling farmers are intending to open the clamp.

In addition, it will also include latest information on the new additive Ecocool, after its first full season of on-farm use.

Launched last year, and containing two different beneficial bacteria, Ecocool is designed to not only reduce dry matter losses by improving fermentation, but also to tackle the feed value and dry matter losses that occur when maize silage heats up due to aerobic spoilage caused by yeasts and moulds.

Results have shown that it can extend the time before maize silage starts heating at opening by an extra 4.7 days, Ecosyl product manager, Jackie Bradley, explains.
