Spring barley yields ahead of five-year average

The average treated yield of spring barley control varieties (8.2 t/ha) is above the five-year average (7.6 t/ha), reports AHDB.

Harvest Results from four AHDB Recommended Lists (RL) spring barley trials sites (Hampshire, Scottish Borders, Fife, and Perth and Kinross) have been published. The average treated yield of control varieties (8.2 t/ha) is above the five-year average (7.6 t/ha).

2019 averages

Initial results for 2019 show the control variety RGT Planet and LG Diablo at 106%, with Cosmopolitan (105%), Laureate (104%) RGT Asteroid (104%) and KWS Sassy (103%) just behind. Of the 2019 candidate varieties, the potential feed variety Fairway (110%) is the highest yielding, with potential malting varieties SY Splendor (109%), LG Furlong (108%), SY Tungsten (107%) all performing well on yield, although for malting varieties quality is more important than outright yield.

2015–19 (five-year) averages

Cosmopolitan and LG Diablo (106%) are just ahead of Laureate (104%) and RGT Planet (103%) on yield, with RGT Asteroid and Chanson both on (102%) in the five-year averages.

The candidate potential malting varieties SY Splendor, SY Tungsten and LG Furlong are all at 107%, just ahead of the highest yielding recommended varieties in the five-year average figures. Potential feed variety Fairway and the potential malting varieties Firefoxx and LG Serengeti (106%) are yielding similar to the highest yielding recommended varieties.
