Thurlow Nunn Standen auctions 1971 Massey Ferguson in aid of Dementia UK

Agricultural machinery dealer Thurlow Nunn Standen has raised over £25,000 for Dementia UK through a charity auction of a 1971 Massey Ferguson tractor.

Agricultural machinery dealer Thurlow Nunn Standen has raised £25,000 for Dementia UK through an auction of a 1971 Massey Ferguson tractor.
James Thurlow and Henry Woodfield at the auction last Saturday.

The classic 1971 Massey Ferguson 135, which holds a special place in the heritage of the dealership, as it was restored by the company’s late chairman, John Thurlow, was sold to Henry Woodfield.

Mr Woodfield, who had previously dealt with Mr Thurlow over 40 years ago, wanted the tractor for both the memories and to support the fundraising efforts for Dementia UK.

James Thurlow, chairman of Thurlow Nunn and John Thurlow’s son, explained that the Massey holds an emotional value to the family, as John Thurlow renovated it himself.

“Dad was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2019 and passed away last year.

“We’ve chosen to fundraise for Dementia UK as part of our 150th anniversary celebrations. We’d like the money to be used to fund admiral nurse services online and on the phone so anyone can contact them and get support they and their loved ones need.

“We really appreciate this service, as admiral nurses support families through this gruelling process of seeing someone slip away in front of your eyes. This is why we decided to fundraise for Dementia UK.”

One of John Thurlow’s favourite tractors

Mr Thurlow added that the 1971 Massey Ferguson 135 represents an important part of the family’s heritage.

“We’ve represented Massey in Suffolk since 1907. We’re probably the longest serving dealer for the Massey brand in the world.

“The 1971 Massey Ferguson was one of my father’s favourite tractors. This is the one he kept remembering even during the dark days of dementia.”

This year Thurlow Nunn Standen celebrates 150 years in business. The team has taken on a challenge to fundraise £150,000 to mark this milestone.
