Man arrested in relation to murder of Irish farmer Michael Gaine

The man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of murder of an Irish farmer, Michael Gaine, who disappeared in March.

Michael Gaine was reported missing on 21st March 2025.

Gardaí have just confirmed that the officers found partial human remains.  

The man’s body was supposed to be dismembered and dumped in a slurry tank. The tank was then emptied and spread across several fields, Belfast Live confirmed. 

Mr Gaine was reported missing from his home near Kenmare, Co. Kerry, on Friday 21st March 2025. The 58-year-old sheep farmer was last seen in Kenmare town at approximately 11:00 am on Thursday 20th March. 

BBC News reported that a man in his 50s, is being held in custody as searches and technical examinations at the site near Mr Gaine’s farm continue. 

‘Respectable, hardworking genuine man’

Independent TD (member of the Irish parliament) for Kerry, Michael Healy-Rae, told the media that the local community in Kenmare demands answers. 

He added: “Mike was a very respectable, hardworking, genuine man, a great community person and a person that everybody liked. 

“To think that somebody would have this type of event happen to them – we’re all horrified. We’re upset. 

“It is not something that we’re used to in any part of Ireland. But in this locality, we never had a situation like this before.”
