Farmers help extinguish three-week long wildfire in North Yorkshire
28th August 2025
North Yorkshire farmers have been praised for their efforts to help put down the blaze in Langdale Moor.

The moorland fire broke out near RAF Fylingdales in North Yorkshire on Monday evening, 11th August. Firefighters from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have been attending the scene since then.
On 13th August the fire was declared a major incident as the blaze spread, covering around five square km. More resources were being sent to the moorland.
The force has confirmed that local farmers have been assisting at the scene, helping to extinguish the wildfire.
The crews have been operating on the perimeter to tackle the fire. They are being supported by neighbouring services and a helicopter which is assisting with dropping water.
Chief fire officer Jonathan Dyson has thanked everyone who offered support to the firefighters during this critical situation.
He said: “Our crews, control room staff and officers have worked around the clock this past week to tackle the moorland fire at Langdale. It’s been especially hot and tiring work for the crews and officers at the scene.
“The generosity of communities and businesses through donations, support and well wishes has been truly outstanding. I’m especially grateful to local farmers, gamekeepers and partner agencies who’ve assisted on the ground and to our neighbouring fire services for providing additional resources.”

Further fire spread
On 22nd August the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that while the officers are still at the scene tackling the blaze, an official fire investigation has started to establish the cause of the fire.
On 25th August the force said that officers continue their work at the scene and are likely to do so for some time.
“Crews and partner agencies continue hotspotting and working to prevent further fire spread by damping down areas.
“To allow our teams to work safely, please do avoid the area, including the cycle tracks through Langdale Forest. If you’re visiting other areas of the countryside, please follow wildfire prevention advice,” the force said.
On 26th August the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the fire spread on Fylingdales Moor and there is a lot of smoke in the area.
The officers advised people affected by smoke to keep doors and windows closed. Due to the large amount of smoke in the area some roads remain shut.
Some areas were evacuated including the Grouse Hill Caravan Park. No property has been involved in the fire at this point, the force confirmed.
