Suffolk: 75 pigs killed in agricultural building fire
29th September 2025
75 pigs were killed in an agricultural building fire in Cookley, East Suffolk, this morning.

Firefighters from the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service were called just before 7.30 am on 29th September to reports of a building fire in Cookley.
On arrival, crews found an agricultural building measuring approximately 30m x 20m – housing around 400 pigs – well alight. The building is of brick construction with a metal frame, and multiple fires were discovered inside.
The pigs had already been released from the building before firefighters arrived. Sadly, a number of animals sustained severe injuries.
A vet was in attendance and worked on site to provide care and, where necessary, to humanely euthanise pigs with non-survivable burns to prevent further suffering, the force confirmed.
Firefighters from Framlingham, Wrentham, Leiston, Bungay and Saxmundham tackled the fire using two hose reel jets and a water carrier due to the lack of a nearby water supply.
The incident was sectorised to support firefighting operations, and good progress was made, with the fire surrounded and extinguished by 10:23am. A stop was called at 10:57, signalling that no further resources were required.
Unfortunately, 75 pigs died as a result of the blaze.
The Environment Agency has attended the scene. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a fire investigation will be carried out.
