Benefits of modern drainage
16th November 2025
Land drainage is as old as agriculture itself and many of the existing systems from the early 20th century onwards still work today, says Andrew Wright, of Miles Drainage 20 Ltd. However, their performance is usually inadequate so they have been, or need to be, replaced by modern drainage systems – normally using shingle backfill and in clay soils, mole draining as a secondary treatment.

Good drainage design and installation will maximise yield and allow more flexibility in timeliness as the soil will dry out sooner, allowing an early entry for field operations. With the land warming up earlier in spring, in some intensive cropping systems, this may allow an extra crop to be grown over the season.
Based in East Anglia but operating nationwide, Miles Drainage provides a GPS-based quality land drainage design, installation and maintenance service to agricultural, utility and sports field customers, as well as the installation of water supplies and irrigation mains.
The company will exhibit its trailed single leg mole plough at LAMMA; it’s available in both standard and high clear beam, the latter being available with a pitch adjuster. The company can also assist in the refurbishment of older machines.
