Optimising your cattle’s lifecycle

Staying compliant and meeting legislative requirements will always be at the forefront of cattle farmers’ actions, but Farmplan says its Cattle Manager software offers a range of features that can positively impact herd performance.
The software helps producers to optimise the lifecycle of their cattle from start to finish, providing a range of metrics that allow performance to be monitored immediately, the company says. From accurate calving details to direct links with breed societies and pedigree trees, information can be recorded against each animal and their progress monitored over their lifetime.
Cattle Manager gives farmers the ability to record specific feed details and additional costings, while also importing or entering cattle weight, which helps to build a full picture of performance. This insight can then be used for future planning, whether that be breeding or selling. Key information such as sale prices, weights and slaughter data can be imported or entered, providing greater visibility when it comes to herd performance.
Ian Norbury, who runs a family farm in Cheshire, is planning to expand his Angus herd – developing pedigree stock sales, achieving better carcasses quicker and driving down costs, while making the system easier for one person to operate.
Ian’s commitment to “measuring, monitoring and making changes” has seen him introduce Farmplan’s Cattle Manager software this year, which is proving a key tool in his armoury. He says: “You can’t use data if you haven’t collected it in the first place.”
