Suffolk firefighters attend ongoing straw fire near Felixstowe

Four fire crews have been tackling a straw fire that broke out on a field near Felixstowe in Suffolk.

Firefighters from Ipswich East, Princes Street, Felixstowe and Woodbridge fire stations were mobilised following reports of a blaze that broke out yesterday, 31st August, on Old Felixstowe Road in Stratton Hall, just before 3pm.
A spokesperson for the force confirmed that the initial fire and a fire in an adjacent stubble field (approximately two acres) were extinguished, however, two stacks of up to 100 tonnes of straw caught light and remained well alight throughout the day, driven by strong winds.

Firefighters remained at the scene overnight
“The farmer was in attendance and was awaiting the arrival of further fire machinery to cultivate the field in an attempt to prevent the fire from spreading.
“Firefighters focused on protecting adjacent land and farm vehicles and hot spotted in fields,” a spokesperson for Suffolk County Council said.

Firefighters remained at the scene overnight to maintain a watching brief. Just after midnight, the crews reported that around 80 tonnes were left to burn, and at 03:30am, they confirmed that it was reducing well in size.
The Environment Agency was informed about the incident. After 11am today, 1st September, crews put an extended fire break in place around the fire, which was under control and smouldering. They are set to reinspect at around 3.30 pm unless the farmer contacts them sooner.
