3rd August 2025
British farming community has paid tribute to Maimie Paterson who passed away at the age of 77.

Mrs Paterson passed away peacefully at home in Dunblane on Sunday, 27th July 2025.
She was the beloved wife of Robert and much-loved mother to Robert and Liz. Mrs Paterson served as a vice president of the Royal Highland Show; she also was a former president of the Beltex Sheep Society, a former chairwoman of the National Sheep Association (Scotland), and a council member of the British Blue Cattle Society.
Robin Gray, who was the RHASS president when Mrs Paterson was vice president, said: “The agricultural community is mourning the loss of Maimie Paterson, a dedicated and passionate supporter of farming whose life and work has left a lasting impact on the sector.
“From 2023 to 2024, Maimie served as a vice president of RHASS, a role in which her efforts were pivotal to the success of the presidential year. Those who worked alongside her recall her energy, vision, and determination, all of which helped ensure the show’s continued reputation as one of the finest agricultural events.
“Maimie will be deeply missed, and RHASS is grateful for her contribution to the society and extends its heartfelt condolences to the Paterson family.”
‘Long-standing and highly respected figure in Scottish sheep industry’
Mrs Paterson served NSA Scotland with dedication over many years, holding key roles including treasurer and later vice chairwoman of the NSA Scotland Committee. In 2018, she was awarded the prestigious NSA Silver Salver in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the Scottish sheep sector.
A spokesperson for NSA Scotland said: “We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Maimie Paterson, a long-standing and highly respected figure in the Scottish sheep industry.
“She was well-known for her regular letters to the Scottish farming press — unafraid to highlight the shortcomings of policies and politicians of all colours — giving voice to concerns that resonated deeply across the agricultural community.
“A strong and passionate advocate for the industry, Maimie’s voice is one that will be sorely missed. Her loss will be deeply felt across both the beef and sheep communities. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.”
‘Stalwart of agricultural industry’
Andy Ryder of the British Blue Cattle Society added that Mrs Paterson had been a stalwart of the agricultural industry for many years.
“Her contributions to the society and the wider farming community were considerable and well recognised. Her passing leaves a vacuum that can never truly be filled. She was a constant presence, always available with wise words, advice, and support.
“Maimie founded the Auchenlay herd with her husband, Robert, a renowned herd that reflected her lifelong commitment to the industry. The society is thankful for her many years of involvement, both on council and as a member. We are deeply indebted to Maimie. Our heartfelt condolences go to the Paterson family at this difficult time,” he concluded.
The funeral service will be held at Dunblane Cathedral on Tuesday, 12th August 2025, at 11:30 am.
