Young farmers from Yorkshire got crafty for ‘special and worthwhile’ cause

Members of the Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers took part in a competition at the annual County Rally, crocheting 36 hats that were donated to Special Baby Care Unit.

Members of the Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers crocheted 36 hats that were donated to premature babies.
Rebecca Keay, Yorkshire Young Farmers‘ promotion and skills committee chairwoman, handing over the hats to Yvonne
Campbell, head of charity at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust.

Members aged 10 to 28 have crafted a wonderful variety of colourful, uniquely designed hats, which will be worn by premature babies in the Special Care Baby Unit at Harrogate District Hospital.

The hats were displayed on the Young Farmers’ stand at the Great Yorkshire Show and judged by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s president consort, Hilda Walmsley.

‘Special and worthwhile cause’

Rebecca Keay, chairwoman of the promotion and skills committee of Yorkshire Young Farmers, said: “Members from across our 43 clubs crafted some fantastic hats, and it was great to be able to donate them to such a special and worthwhile cause.”

The winning exhibit at the Yorkshire Show was created by Eva Fawce of Stokesley YFC, with Jayne Ellis of Winksley-cum-Grantley taking second place and Chloe Barker of Masham was awarded third.

Rebecca, a member of Stokesley Young Farmers, added: “Young Farmers Clubs do a lot for charities, including tractor runs, Christmas tree collections and much more, but this was a different activity to normal and demonstrated our members’ skills and talents.”
