Christmas tractor runs bring in thousands for charities

Farmers up and down the country have begun the annual Christmas tractor runs, bringing festive cheer and raising large sums for various charities. We took a look at some of the recent events…

The Sheepy Ploughing Xmas Tractor Run in Warwickshire smashed its £10K target, raising over £18,000 so far for three charities: Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance and Lens Light.

The run is now in its fourth year and capped at 75 tractors to minimise disruption for local residents, authorities and road users.

On 8-9th December, tractors were joined by a steam engine which led them through the town centre, as well as Countryfile who were filming for their Christmas special on 24th December.

Last year the run raised over £50,000.

Meanwhile 96 tractors took part in the Essex Illuminated Christmas Charity Tractor Run, organised by the Lyon family.

The event was hosted by the RW Crawfords Essex depot on 9th December and has so far raised around £10,000 for Essex and Herts Air Ambulance and Cancer Research UK.

Luke Fairbrother won the Best Decorated Tractor in a Massey Ferguson and was given a Christmas hamper as a reward.

Suffolk Young Farmers Club saw a record number of tractors at around 135, compared to 97 last year. Donations for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices are so far sitting at £3,500.

Suffolk YFC thanked James Forrest, who hosted them at Mowness Hall, as well as everyone who came out to support the tractor run, with a huge turnout in Debenham and Framlingham.

The brilliant event was organised by Harry Suckling, Suffolk YFC’s fundraising secretary, with help from the rest of the committee: chairwoman Louise Davy, vice chair Will Pratt, social secretary Katherine Cross, treasurer Ella Thackray treasurer and sports and competitions secretary, Alex Lancaster.
