Guidance for accepting safe feed deliveries on farms published by AIC

To help ensure the safety of farm staff and delivery drivers during animal feed deliveries, the Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC), in collaboration with other industry stakeholders, has published revised guidance offering practical advice on safely accepting feed consignments.

The guidance ‘Managing the Safe Receipt of Animal Feed 2023’ has been updated and released by the Farm Safety Partnership, a group that includes agri-supply industry trade association the AIC, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), National Farmers Union (NFU), NFU Mutual, Country Land and Business Association (CLA) and Tenant Farmers Association (TFA).

The revised publication offers livestock farmers valuable, practical guidance and a useful delivery planning checklist to help them comply with AIC’s Code of Practice for Making Safe Deliveries of Animal Feed to Farms. Set out in January 2023, the code provides detailed information on the requirements to be met by farmers to safely accept delivery of animal feeds.

The updated guidance includes a detailed discussion of delivery planning and covers the most common types of feed deliveries encountered on farms, such as:

  • Bulk blown deliveries
  • Bulk tipped
  • Bag deliveries
  • Bulk liquid deliveries

David Moss, AIC Services Technical Manager, said: “A regular feature of working life for every UK livestock producer is taking delivery of animal feeds either in bulk dry or liquid, or packed in bags and drums.

“Farmers and their feed suppliers have a shared responsibility to make sure that their farm staff and the supplier’s delivery driver are safe whenever animal feed products are delivered to a farm.

“This revised guidance offers valuable information to help everyone involved stay safe.”

The new guidance can be viewed and downloaded from the AIC website.
