Popular Blacknose Beauties sale returns this summer

The two-day show and sale is the pinnacle of the Valais Blacknose calendar, giving UK breeders the chance to showcase their animals and battle it out for the accolade of Overall Supreme Champion.

A Valais Blacknose sheep called Deepdale Impact which sold for 6,500gns at last year's Valais Blacknose sale.

Last year’s sale was topped by shearling ram Deepdale Impact, which made 6,500gns and was bred by Heather and Julian Adams in the Peak District.

The Blacknose Beauties National Show & Sale is returning to Carlisle this August, featuring two days of competitions, demonstrations and trade stalls.

On the first day (18th August), sheep will be graded by certified UK grading judges using an adopted points system from Valais, Switzerland. This ensures the highest breed standards are maintained in the UK.

Last year saw two champions for the first time in the show’s history. Welsh breeders Gerallt and Kerry Jones were awarded their first Overall Supreme Champion title with their aged ewe Snowdonia Halo.

Overall Reserve Champion went to Jamie Wood of the Northumberland flock with his junior ram lamb Prendwick Johnny Depp.

Also on the first day, Cammy Wilson, who is well known for his YouTube channel ‘The Sheep Game’ will also demonstrate shearing a Valais Blacknose sheep in full fleece – an unenviable task. The day will end with an evening BBQ, which is also open to the public.

Competitions will run throughout the second day (19th August), culminating with the much-anticipated sale. Last year, 83 Valais Blacknose sheep went under the hammer, with the sale topped by shearling ram Deepdale Impact, which made 6,500gns and was bred by Heather and Julian Adams in the Peak District.

Following at 6,400gns was ram lamb Lyngarth Juggernaut, aged ram Crookedstane Henry at 5,500gns, and ram lamb Daffodil Hill Jackpot at 5,500gns. Emily and Henry Duncan of the Whitehall flock, Dumfriesshire, achieved the highest female price with shearling ewe Whitehall Jasmine selling at 5,500gns – and their aged in-lamb ewe Whitehall Holly achieving 5,000gns.

This year the society is also launching a raffle to raise money for the Charlie Dallas Lancaster (CDL) Foundation, which provides help and support to organisations and individuals working in the mental health and suicide prevention sphere.

Tickets are available both online and at the show, with proceeds going to the CDL Foundation. In addition, 25% of the proceeds from the VBS 2023 calendar sales will be donated.

Commenting on the upcoming Show & Sale, VBS chairman Raymond Irvine said: “Blacknose Beauties 2023 will be our biggest event to date. With our membership now exceeding 800 and the increasing popularity of the breed, we are anticipating strong competition and an exciting sale.

“We are grateful for the continued support of our members, sponsors, traders and volunteers and are looking forward to welcoming everyone back to Carlisle to Blacknose Beauties in August.”

The show will be held at H&H Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th August.
