UK’s largest dairy show returns with carbon-focused theme

The Dairy Show is set to return to the Bath & West Showground in Somerset on Wednesday 4th October 2023 to showcase the latest innovations, address challenges and opportunities around net zero, and celebrate the best in British dairying.

With the sector currently under pressure from high input costs, falling milk prices and ongoing labour shortages, the show will feature seminars and talks on topical matters, as well as demonstrations of first-class stockmanship.

The event will also highlight the need for greater support for the dairy industry, which is a fundamental part of British agriculture, said head of shows, Jess Chiplen.

“There remains a lot of pressure on producers, and it does require more robust action from government and industry.

“But it is also clear that the sector is resilient and determined; it continues to develop pioneering solutions to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss, and importantly, the solutions can support our world-class farmers in being productive, profitable farm businesses.”

The Dairy Show’s theme this year will be carbon, with a focus on how producers can reduce their carbon footprint and capitalise on this natural resource. This comes at a time when many farmers looking for greater clarity around natural capital markets and measuring carbon, Ms Chiplen pointed out.

Farm Carbon Toolkit, Trinity Ag-Tech, Mole Valley Farmers, and Bennaman will be joining producers in the seminar tent.

Remaining at the show’s heart are the dairy cattle, with exhibitors travelling from all over the country to compete in a variety of breed classes before respective champions go head-to-head for the sought-after Supreme Champion title.

The Dairy Show will also be hosting the Jersey Cattle Society of the UK, and the English Guernsey Cattle Society’s National Shows.

Competition entries are now open to all classes, including the national shows, and can be made via the Bath & West website.

Jack Cordery, chief executive of headline sponsor, Mole Valley Farmers, said: “We are delighted to continue our long-standing association with The Dairy Show as headline sponsor. For more than 40 years the event has showcased the dairy industry and championed the sector.

“As a farmer-owned business with a cooperative ethos, the show gives us a strong platform to meet with our customers and demonstrate how we can support their farms.”

The Royal Bath & West of England Society is looking forward to welcoming everyone back at the show and celebrating the best in British dairying at the Dairy Industry Dinner, taking place on the show’s eve (3rd October).

Advance tickets are available at £17 per adult, increasing to £20 on the gate. Students, with proof, will have discounted entry at £15 and children under 15 years old will have free entry. Gates will open at 8:30am on the day and there will be free parking at the event.
